Turning an idea in to project
You have an idea or interest, but how do you turn that into a project? We are always asking questions but not always do we realise it, it becomes part of our subconscious. Think of your interest /Idea /question/ product and lets look at some examples that go through the scientific process.
Example: Interest in tennis
What are your interests and hobbies? Of have you observed something that has led you to a question?
|Sometimes balls are bouncier than others, why? Could it be the type of court I am playing on?|
Do some background research, ask your teacher or an expert
|Read up on the materials tennis balls are made of, the different surfaces courts are made of. Research the physics behind the energy of a bouncing ball|
How will you answer the question? What are you going to change, this is called the independent variable, (only change one thing). What am I going to measure, this is called the dependent variable.
I am going to test different surfaces (grass, concrete, astroturf) for their bounciness independent variable.
I am going to measure how high the balls bounce, this is called the dependent variable
|Hypothesis /prediction/aim||What do you think is going to happen? Your best guess to your question and why?||This will be based on the research you have done. I think the ball will bounce the highest on a ....surface because....|
|Materials and Methods||
Step by step, what did you do? What equipment did you use? (make sure somebody could copy exactly what you did). You will need to consider how to make it fair.
|I am going to drop the ball from the same height on different surfaces against a white wall with a tape measure. I will record with a video to take the exact height and record the height. I will make it fair by using the same brand of ball and during the same weather conditions. I will do it on each surface 3 times (this is called replication).|
|Use your senses, collect data you can measure and describe what you observed. Organise data into table or graphs and describe what it tells us. Pictures drawing, videos are all useful ways of showing results. Age suitable analysis of data is also required||I will have a table with all my measurements and then make a graph with the different surfaces at the bottom and height up the side.|
|Based on your RESULTS and OBSERVATIONS what did you find out? Was your hypothesis right? Can you compare this to other peoples work? why do you think it happened? How would you change it if you did it again? What further questions have come up (ask yourself what if…?||I found out that the bounciest surface was....as the results showed... this proves/disproves my hypothesis... If I did this again I would (suggest changes to both your experiment if something didn't work well and also other possible experiments).|

|LOGBOOK||You will always need to keep a log book. This will contain all the work you do not just what you choose to display. It is a crucial part of any science or technology project|
